What is HIV?

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a life-altering condition. HIV kills the body cells that protect against disease. In other words, it destroys the body’s immune system which can eventually leads to AIDS. HIV cannot go through the skin unless there are open sores or bleeding cuts. The HIV virus must be able to get into your blood stream.


Can I get HIV?

HIV can be transmitted by:

• Having unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sex with an infected partner

• Sharing needles to inject drugs

• Accidental needle sticks

• By mothers during delivery, or when breast feeding their babies after birth

 

How can HIV enter your bloodstream?

HIV can enter your body through:

• The anus and rectum

• The vagina

• The penis

• The mouth

• The eyes

 

 

How can I prevent HIV?

• Abstain from sex and/or sharing needles

• Do not allow anybody’s pre-ejaculate, semen, blood, or vaginal fluids to enter your body

• Use latex condoms correctly and consistently

• Do not share needles (such as in tattooing or shooting drugs)

• Know your status…Get tested.

What’s involved with the test for HIV?

Several tests are used in testing for HIV.  The antibody tests determine whether are not there are antibodies present in your blood.  Viral load tests determine your viral load or the amount of virus present in your body.
